Getting in Shape Can Lead to Work Productivity Gains

Most business owners tend to focus in certain areas to drive better profit margins and efficiency.  Typically this is on cost of goods sold (COGS), fixed costs such as payroll, rent, and other expenses.  But you can also drive higher efficiency by encouraging your employees to live healthier and more active lives.

Supporting Your Employees Health

Plenty of businesses large and small provide health care for their employees.  This is just one of the many benefits employers use to remain competitive in today’s market.  Employees appreciate this sort of incentive, but there is more you can do without dramatically increasing your costs.

Many employers are now learning that helping their employees make better choices in terms of nutrition and exercise can actually lead to happier employees who are more productive, sick less often, and have higher overall job satisfaction.

The concept is very simple.  When your employees feel better about their health, they feel better about many components of their life.  There are several ways to help them.

Nutrition Workshops

Teaching your employees about the health benefits of eating better is a great place to start.  Our modern diets include so many foods that offer very little in terms of nutritional value.  Fast food is a perfect example.  Many employees who work in the field are too busy to stop and eat a nutritious lunch.  Instead they’ll just swing by the local McDonald’s or Burger King to grab a quick bite.

While these types of foods can provide gratification in the form of satiating hunger (briefly) there is practically zero nutritional value in a Big Mac or Whopper.

Showing your employees how easy it is to prepare solid nutritional lunches the night before is a great way to help them down the path of healthier eating overall.  Having a professional nutritionist come in to talk to your employees is a great way to kick this off.  Some nutritionists will give an hour long talk at your place of business that details foods that will help your employees feel better, look better, and they’re quick and easy to prepare.

Diet Advice

Most employers don’t want anything to do with offering diet advice to their employees.  This can be treacherous ground in terms of overstepping your boundaries as a boss.  Unfortunately there is tons of terrible diet advice out there in terms of losing weight.  For most people it’s about how to do it quickly and easily.  They don’t consider the long term ramifications of living with difficult diets.

The military diet is a perfect example.  It claims to help people lose 10 pounds in 3 days.  Does that sound healthy?  You can find a complete debunking of the 3 day military diet at A Manifested Life.  Not only is a terrible diet in terms of effectiveness, it’s also quite unhealthy.

Offer Subsidized Lunches

This can be a difficult pill to swallow for many employers, but offering subsidized lunches for your employees can help them to make better choices.  This can be as simple as giving them gift cards to specific restaurants that offer healthy options.  You can also encourage competitions between employees to eat the best.

The key is starting a habit of eating better so that employees start to realize the benefits.  They will lose weight, start feeling better, sleeping better, and performing better on the job.

All of this is of great benefit to both them and your business.

Exercise Programs

Another area that many employers miss out on is helping employees to become more active.  Being active every day has substantial health benefits and can reduce the chances of heart disease, diabetes, and many other potentially life-threatening diseases.

Subsidizing your employees gym memberships is a great way to accomplish this if you have the money to do so.  If not you can encourage walks during lunch.  Take the lead and encourage others to follow.  Just getting 20-30 minutes of exercise in the middle of the day can have so many positive impacts.

Your employees will thank you for it.
